This Saturday, members of FXU Athletics took part in the inaugural Penryn Campus parkrun. Parkruns are great ways for runners to get a feel for racing in a super relaxed setting, whilst also having the option to simply run socially! It was a tough course consisting of three laps of a slightly under 2km loop, in which the first 800m was all downhill, and then the second half was all uphill, including the infamous AMATA hill!
With such a long downhill to start off the run, it was guaranteed to be a fast start at the front. This quickly proved to be the case with several of our runners packing near the front and clocking in a sub, or close to, 3:30 for their first kilometre! As the frontrunners hit the first hill section, the pack began to stretch out with Alex, Tom, and Emrys moving clear of most of the field. A gruelling slog up the AMATA hill resulted in most of the field dropping back compared to our runners who were able to push even further forward- proving Tom’s hill sessions are paying dividends. Ottilie and Sasha meanwhile, had managed to gain an unassailable lead of almost a minute against the rest of the women; a distance they only solidified over the next two laps. Comfortable performances by Alex and Tom, alongside a spectacular, uphill sprint finish from Emrys ensured that FXU Athletics were able to claim three of the top four positions- a fantastic achievement! Special mentions go to Alex McCartney and Ottilie Bright who won the men and women open categories respectively, each by almost a minute! Congratulations also to Ethan Brooks and Charlotte Matthews who won the Men’s 18-19 and Women’s 20-24 categories respectively. Thank you to everyone who came along it was a super tough course and to see everyone do so well can only bode well for BUCS and the rest of our competitive year. Finally, thank you to our social running coordinator Miriam, alongside all of the other parkrun volunteers who made such a fantastic event possible!

What a great start to the Cross-Country season! We had an early start (9am) to make sure we got there in plenty of time and were lucky enough to travel up to Plymouth with Dave Buzza on the Cornwall AC minibus. Upon arrival we were greeted with a beautiful, summery day, which was great news for those watching; but perhaps less so for those competing! We dropped off our bags and met the rest of the Cornwall AC team. We then all walked the course to get a better idea of what faced us in our races later. Plymouth is a true cross-country course with plenty of hills, little wooded sections, and technical terrain making it a great race to start the season with. Senior Women’s Race The Senior Women’s race (5.34km) was our first race of the day at 12:30pm. Racing in this category was Sasha Clark, Roanne Lilley and Ottilie Bright. It was a united start with many of the CAC athletes grouping together. Everyone ran thoroughly well with Sasha coming in as the first FXU AC member to go through the finish line. What a great start to the Cross-Country season! The Senior Men’s Race The Senior Men’s race (8.90km) was at 2:10pm so they had lots of time to warm up and ‘get in the zone’ for the race. With such a stacked field, it was a quick start with Ben Foyle taking the lead for FXU AC working through the field. Despite the tough start, our runners got stuck in with some gritty performances and a couple of outstanding sprint finishes against our friends at Exeter University! A special mention to Ben Foyle for placing 4th in his race despite being stung by a bee halfway through the course! Results:
Senior Women Cornwall AC placed 3rd overall out of 35 clubs with 725 points Senior Men Cornwall AC placed 2nd overall out of 38 clubs with 1414 points A big well done to everyone who took part, and we look forward to seeing you all at our next races! It is great to be back competing after this long dry spell since COVID, there was a lovely team spirit, and we are looking forward to the upcoming events this season and hopefully see more people join in on these fun events!
